FastForWord to Basketball Season
Marfa ISD is excited to begin using FastForWord as a new reading software program. It will be used for all reading levels including ESL students. Basketball season also has begun in Marfa with both the boy’s and girl’s teams kicking off.

January is School Board Appreciation Month
Volunteers Who Care about Our Kids
Each January, we pause to express our appreciation for a very special group of volunteers: the school board members.
Usually, we don’t think of school board members as school volunteers, but they do in fact volunteer to serve. School board members give their time, energy, and counsel to the school district—without pay. They take on the job of governing the district—making the best decisions they can for our children—with the full understanding that they will receive only the satisfaction of their contribution.

Our students have successfully participated in a robotics competition for the past five years. This year the senior students have asked to accept a new challenge by competing in U.S. First Robotics competition. These robots are created by the students and not as kit-driven as in previous contests. In addition, they are much larger robots. This year’s robot is expected to have a base of 16 inches by 32 inches. Who knows how tall it will be. Keep an eye on our website to follow our robotics teams this spring. Marfa ISD “Met Standard” in both the 2013-2014 and 2012-2013 School Year. Marfa Schools are accredited by the Texas Education Agency. Texas has only two ratings: “Met Standard” and “Needing Improvement.”
The Robotics Program at Marfa ISD is growing with or without a teacher. We are competing in a program called US First that was created by the developer of the Segway. The theme this year is recycling and the goal is to build a robot that can move and stack storage totes, trash cans and litter (in the form of pool noodles). The first competition will be in Lubbock on February 28th against 54 other high school teams. You may be familiar with previous robotic projects at MISD.
